Don’t Put the Key to Your Happiness in Someone Else’s Pocket

Happiness: something well-known, but not well-found. Although feelings of happiness vary from person to person, it’s something that is searched out by everyone. But perhaps that’s the problem—we are searching. We are searching as though it is something difficult to find, or that it is something we don’t control.

Happiness is defined as the agreeable sensations which spring from the enjoyment of good. Take a look at that last part again, “…the enjoyment of good.”

Good is all around you, but it’s up to you to be aware of it. When you see the good, you can then keep that at the forefront of your mind, and enjoy it, which in turn gives you happiness. Of course, “good” is also relative. For some, it may be a sunny day and no traffic going to work. For others, it could be that bonus check at the end of the month. Whatever it is for you, it’s there—not hidden, not complicated. It’s there, waiting for you to see it and gain happiness from it.

Situations are not always going to be ideal. I mean, there will be those days it seems everything is going wrong. You know, the day where you burn your hand on the flat iron, spill coffee on your shirt, and you burn supper. It happens. But those things do not take away from the good that is still abundant in your life—the good of having hair to flat iron, coffee to drink, and food to eat.

You deserve to be happy. Everyone does. But don’t put the key to your happiness in someone else’s pocket. Happiness doesn’t lie in others or in circumstances. You need to find it within yourself. Be happy as your own whole. You have the key—use it.
